304 vs 201 Stainless Steel Kitchen Baskets: Buyer’s Guide
For kitchen pull-out baskets, choose a specified stainless steel grade for the intended environment—not simply a product labelled “stainless.” Compare the basket, frame, runners and finish separately. Neither a grade label nor a shiny surface is a lifetime guarantee against corrosion.
304 and 201: what buyers should understand
304 belongs to the chromium-nickel austenitic stainless steel family. 201 belongs to the chromium-manganese-nickel 200 series. Composition and processing matter: not every low-nickel material sold commercially as “200 series” is equivalent to a specified 201 grade. Ask the supplier to identify the applicable material standard and provide available material documentation for the parts being quoted. When composition is critical to the order, agree on a suitable verification method and acceptance requirements before production.
Can 304 stainless steel rust?
Yes. Stainless steel can suffer localized corrosion when the conditions are unsuitable. Chlorides can attack its protective surface layer; trapped deposits and crevices can create additional risks. The British Stainless Steel Association describes these corrosion mechanisms. Cleaning chemicals, exposure, surface condition and maintenance therefore matter alongside the grade.
Do not interpret a grade name as a guaranteed number of rust-free years. Tell your supplier if the product will be used near coastal air, persistent moisture or aggressive cleaning chemicals, and ask for a suitability review for the complete assembly.
A purchasing checklist beyond the steel grade

Give each requested model its own quantity, cabinet dimensions, material and finish requirement. State any evidence or inspection requirements at the quotation stage. The approved sample, drawings and written specification should describe the same assembly that will be supplied.
Frequently asked questions
Does “chrome finish” mean the basket is stainless steel?
No. A finish description does not identify the base metal. Ask for both the substrate and the surface treatment for the quoted part.
Should I choose solely by the lowest quoted price?
Compare like-for-like specifications first: component materials, dimensions, runners, finish, supplied hardware and packaging. A different assembly is not a direct price comparison.
What should I send GST to discuss material options?
Include the product model, installation dimensions, destination and use environment, required finish and quantity. Ask which material options and supporting documents are available for that model.
